What position to adopt in cases like Erich Frauwallner's and Martin Heidegger's?
Both carry on their shoulders the responsibility, as teachers, for the dissemination of their ideas in the young generations they influenced. Both are guilty not only of crimes against humanity, having adhered to Nazism and having sustained it even after the fall, but also of crimes against intelligence and against culture. Can we say that the mental training and the development of their culture could not lead them to a fair and clear perception and appreciation of the events in which they participated, but that both privileges that destiny granted them did not influence them as if they had never participated in them? Intelligence and Culture? Simply separate scientific work, indological or philosophical, from Ideology? Minimize or silence the interference of the Ideology by lowering its importance, as if the passages contaminated by the Ideology were unimportant or not relevant or did not influence the essential value of the work or had a greater participation in it?
