Saúl Ibargoyen Islas (Montevideo, March 26, 1930-Mexico, January 9, 2019) was a Uruguayan poet, narrator, critic, translator and essayist, nationalized Mexican. Member of the so-called «Generation of the crisis», named after the Uruguayan critic Ángel Rama. This generation was made up of Uruguayan writers who published their main works in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1976 he moved to live in Mexico, where he remained until his death. In September 2001, he received Mexican nationality by naturalization.

He worked as a teacher at the School of Writers of the General Society of Writers of Mexico (SOGEM). He was a member of the Academy of Letters of Uruguay since 2008. He published more than forty-five books, among which are: Dreaming death, The endless blood and All foreign land.

His poetic production (1956-2000) was published by the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez and the Instituto de Estudios Chicanos with the title El poeta y yo. This collection of poems includes his main poetry books The Bird in the Swamp (1954), Word for Word (1969), Exiles (1978), Garbage and more poems (1991), The Standing Scribe (2002).

His works have been translated into several languages: English, French, Portuguese, German, Russian, Swedish, Slovenian, and Arabic.
