
A warning about how the digital economy threatens the lives and work of artists – the music, writing and visual arts that sustain our souls and societies. There are two narratives about making a living as an artist in the digital age. One comes from Silicon Valley: “There’s never been a better time to be an artist. If you have a laptop, you have a recording studio. If you have an iPhone, you have a film camera. And if production is cheap, distribution is free – it’s called the Internet. Everybody is an artist – just exploit your creativity and put your stuff out there.” The other narrative comes from artists themselves: “Sure, you can put your stuff out there, but who’s going to pay you for it?
