Soseki Natsume (1867-1916) is considered the most important Japanese novelist of the Meiji period (1868-1912). It is known primarily for his novels Kokoro, Botchan and I'm a cat, as well as his work unfinished Light and darkness. It was also a great composer of haiku and a notable scholar of English literature. He has had a remarkable influence on later Japanese writers.
