Published in France in 2009, while his body was already hospitalized, just before the end, this book shows exactly what it meant for Henri Meschonnic to think against. The untimeliness of thought, thinking is always against the time, against the applause of contemporaries, against power, against the yes to life. Since the more the time says yes to life, the more it becomes a danger to life. The call is to replenish the critical function in its radicality, that is, as a revelation of operations. Criticism is always an affirmation -first and untimely- that entails destruction. It is like a wedge in time, that takes it out of its frame. And disarm the dominant ideas. In this case the wedge is stuck like this: modernity is not something that is in time. And this already operates as a spearhead that places us outside and against the debates - academic and fashionable - that took over the scene for more than 40 years, and that placed the modern (and postmodern) as two successive eras, that they re-emplaced. To leave the postmodern is then to clear up this misunderstanding in which modernity was also entangled. Against Habermas, Lyotard, Jameson, or Touraine. For Meschonnic modernity is an activity of the works ("created by a work"), process of subjectification and historicity, singularization, at any time. Demolishing chronology seeks to disarm the trap of totality, which appears a first time as historicism, then as anti-history, as cogito or post-truth, as revolutionary art or eclecticism. In the two alleged poles the totality commands, its "point of view" (in everything and in nothing) has the effect of emptying the presence of the present, and correlatively turning the past into a globe that prays either is inflamed or punctured, turned ballast or mere commemoration, in order to erase its activation potential, its historicity, its present. Against the closure of the whole, Meschonnic calls us to think the subject of art, poem, ethics and politics, as open historicity, subjectification in process, work to come, sublime breach.
