Beyond the disparity of methods and objects, what unites the various authors of the Frankfurt School is the idea that the living conditions of modern, capitalist societies generate social practices, postures or personality structures that are reflected in a pathological deformation of our rational faculties. It is this theme that makes up the unity of Critical Theory in the plurality of its voices: no matter how heterogeneous the works framed in it, they always point to the objective of investigating the social causes of a pathology of human rationality. Today, when, due to the imperative of an objectless professionalization, the link between philosophy and the analysis of society threatens to be definitively broken, Critical Theory, writes Axel Honneth, "represents a salutary challenge: to continue developing it would mean to investigate again, taking into account theoretical innovations, if the specific organization of our social practices and institutions does not entail a detriment to the potential of human reason."
