Reale proposes an interpretation of the so-called "unwritten doctrines" of Plato opposed to the teaching embodied in the written dialogue, so that the latter must be read from the budgets of those. According to him, the doctrines "unwritten" are the true pinnacle of Platonic thought, which was exposed routinely but only orally, for it argues that, although we have all written works of Plato, we know through it his real thought, to look for in his oral teachings at the Academy (schematically announced in the Metaphysics of Aristotle). This new reading is a total change of scientific paradigm explaining the thinking of Plato. The Seventh Letter and the end of Phaedrus Plato would be the main evidence for the existence and necessity of explanatory unwritten doctrines: the definitive edge of the second "navigation" ("that which one undertakes when, being no wind, surf with oars "). At the heart of this debate lies the still unresolved question of the primacy of the written text in front of the oral tradition, for the interpretation of the history of thought. The author, true to the Platonic view, understand that the "greater things" should be entrusted to the oral tradition and not scripture.
