This volume brings together for the first time in Castilian the three novels that make up Philip Roth's American Trilogy: American Pastoral (1997), I married a communist (1998) and The human mark (2000). All three have the same protagonist, Nathan Zuckerman, perhaps the central character in Roth's novel, an alter ego of writing or "alter mind" as he calls it. Through his eyes, three moments of post-World War II American reality are reflected, the 1960s, 1950s, and 1990s, respectively.

In American Pastoral, Zuckerman tells the story of Swede Levov, the embodiment of the American dream: a legendary athlete in his student years, married to a former Miss New Jersey and heir to his father's factory. Until one day in 1968, the idyllic America he fought for collapses.

I Married a Communist is the story of Iron Rinn, a self-made man, who grew from a mine worker to a famous radio actor. Soldier in World War II, defender of oppressed rights, he ends up on the black list and without a job denounced by his wife during the furious years of McCarthyism.

Finally, The Human Stain shows how Coleman Silk, dean of the university, sees his reputation and career ruined by the fanaticism of political correctness, when conflicting moralities and ideological divisions unleash a new witch hunt, in which innocence is not always excuse enough.

Few times as in this trilogy the narrative art of Philip Roth has risen so high.
