In the words of Professor of History Robert B. Westbrook, Dewey was the most important American philosopher of the first half of the twentieth century, and was, along with Charles Sanders Peirce and William James, one of the founders of the philosophy of pragmatism. It was also during the first half of the twentieth century, the most representative figure of the progressive education in America. Although he is best known for his writings on education, Dewey also wrote influential treatises on art, logic, ethics and democracy, where his position was based on only could achieve full democracy through education and civil society. In this sense, advocated a fully informed public through effective communication among citizens, experts and politicians, with the latter being fully accountable to the public by policies.
