Plants are mostly sedentary, but some possess extraordinary powers of movement and even other features that, at least superficially, are not different from those of animals. Carnivorous plants, the subject of this book, capture, digest and assimilate living animals. These studies of carnivorous plants illustrate once again the great curiosity of Charles Darwin and his fertile mind in the meticulous examination of nature and its general and particular operations. Carnivorous plants were first published in 1875. The second edition (from 1888), which served as the basis for the present translation, was edited by his son Francis Darwin, who incorporated the marginal annotations previously made by the author.
