From the emancipation of servitude to subversive heresies, a red thread traces the history of the transition from feudalism to capitalism. Still today expelled from the great majority of history manuals, the imposition of the powers of the State and the birth of that social formation that would end up taking the name of capitalimo did not occur without resorting to extreme violence. The original accumulation demanded the defeat of the urban and peasant movements, which normally in the form of religious heresy claimed and put into practice various experiments of communal life and distribution of wealth. His annihilation opened the way to the formation of the modern state, the expropriation and fencing of the common lands, the conquest and plunder of America, the opening of the large-scale slave trade and a war against the ways of life and popular cultures. He took women as his main objective. When analyzing the burning of witches, Federici not only unravels one of the most ineffable episodes of modern history, but the heart of a powerful dynamic of social expropriation directed on the body, knowledge and reproduction of women. This work is also the record of unforeseen voices (those of the subordinates: Caliban and the witch) that still resonate strongly today in the struggles that resist the continuous updating of the original violence. Silvia Federici is a professor at Hofstra University in New York. A feminist militant since 1960, she was one of the main animators of international debates about the status and remuneration of domestic work. During the 1980s she worked for several years as a teacher in Nigeria, where she witnessed the new wave of attacks on common goods. Both trajectories converge in this work.
