Emir Sader Simon

Emir Sader Simon (São Paulo, July 13, 1943) is a Brazilian sociologist and political scientist. Of Lebanese origin and a Marxist background, he is strongly linked to leftist governments in South America.

Graduated in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo (where he obtained a doctorate in Political Science), he worked as a professor at the same university until he retired. He was also a researcher at the Center for Socio-Economic Studies at the University of Chile and professor of politics at the State University of Campinas.

He currently directs the Laboratory of Public Policies (LPP) of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, where he teaches sociology and is professor emeritus, and collaborates with various national and international publications. He is a member of the editorial board of the British magazine New Left Review and is the author of books such as El nuevo Topo. The paths of the Latin American left (El Viejo Topo). He chaired the Latin American Association of Sociology (ALAS, 1997-1999) and is one of the organizers of the World Social Forum.
