Throughout four years, Freud wrote more than fifteen hundred letters to his girlfriend, but those corresponding to the last four months of their courtship have not been preserved; it is likely that the rather platonic and romantic content of the letters is based on Martha being the first and only real love in her life.
Ernest Jones, an inveterate biographer of Freud, describes Martha as a delicate, pale, small girl, but with very funny ways; Martha Robert says that she was rather insignificant. Freud also gives his opinion in one of the letters he addresses to him: “I know that you are not beautiful in the sense that painters and sculptors understand it; If you want me to give the words their strict sense, I am forced to confess that you are not a beauty.
