
Torquato Tasso (Sorrento, 1544 – Rome, 1595), poet and playwright, is counted among the greatest authors of the late Renaissance. After studying law in Padua and Bologna, he settled in Ferrara in 1565, where he served at the Este court and devoted himself to writing. His works include the pastoral drama Aminta, his Rimas, and Jerusalem Delivered, unanimously considered his masterpiece, with which he contributed to the renewal of epic and chivalric poetry. He died in Rome shortly before his poetic coronation.
