"The Republic" and "The Laws" are undoubtedly the two most allegedly original works of all Cicero's literary production. Although the model of the same – as the author himself declares – are the homonymous writings of his admired Plato, the great Athenian philosopher of the fifth to fourth centuries, the dialogues of the Roman are not the product of a fortunate philosophical speculation, but the fruit of the political experience of who had in his hands the helm of the State. The ideal of state in Cicero is not utopian, but is confirmed by the real political organization that existed in his homeland – the city of Rome – before the populist and dictatorial whims of some of his compatriots began to undermine it.
