André Chouraqui

André Chouraqui has a doctorate in law from the University of Paris and descended from a family of Spanish Jews who counts among his ancestors with theologians, poets and scientists documented since the sixteenth century. Between 1942 and 1945 were enrolled in the French Resistance and was an active member of the maquis. He was a lawyer and judge in Algeria, Secretary and Permanent Delegate of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, vice president of governmental organizations of UNICEF-UNAC, adviser to Prime Minister Ben Gurion between 1959 and 1963 and deputy mayor of Jerusalem between 1965 and 1973. His prodigious literary work has covered issues of law, history, sociology, philosophy, biographies, plays, poetry. It is widely known for his personal translation of the Bible and the Koran.
