Anna Świrszczyńska (7 February 1909 – 30 September 1984) was a Polish poet. His surname in some editions outside Poland has been simplified to Swir. Świrszczyńska's work addresses a wide variety of themes, including autobiographical references to her experiences during World War II, motherhood, the female body, and sensuality.
He was born and raised in Warsaw, into a humble family of artists. He began publishing his poems in the 1930s. During the Nazi occupation of Poland he participated in the Polish Resistance and published poems in underground magazines. At that time, he met fellow poet Czesław Miłosz. In the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 she collaborated as a nurse. These experiences during the war are reflected in his work Budowałam barykadę (Raising the Barricade, 1974), where he describes the pain and suffering of that time. She has also written with great sincerity about the female body during different stages of her life. Outside Poland, his work has been disseminated in particular thanks to the English translations made jointly by Miłosz and Leonard Nathan.
