The central theme of his work is the flow of information through biological and social networks, as well as the ecology and evolution of pathogenic organisms, including the development of resistances. He is co-author, with Lee Dugatkin, of a college textbook, Evolution. He is considered an expert to turn to to explain the dynamics of misinformation and misinformation. Beyond the field of evolutionary biology, in 2007 he developed the Eigenfactor, a system of metrics for the classification of scientific journals.
