Denis Mukwege

Denis Mukwege was born in the Belgian Congo in 1955. His life has been marked by the transformations and tragedies of his homeland. He studied medicine in Bujumbura, Burundi, before specializing in gynecology in Angers, France. A renowned surgeon, he is recognized as the world's leading expert on the treatment of rape injuries, and his holistic approach to healing has inspired other initiatives worldwide. In Europe, he received the Olof Palme Prize (2008) and the Sakharov Prize for Human Rights (2014). In November 2018, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with Yazidi human rights activist and survivor of sexual violence Nadia Murad.
