Eliseo Diego

ELISEO DIEGO. An important Cuban writer, he was born in the city of Havana on July 2, 1920 and died in Mexico City, on March 1, 1994. Poet, narrator, essayist and translator, he was a founding member of the magazine Origenes (Havana , 1944-1956), directed by the poet and narrator José Lezama Lima and the prominent intellectual José Rodríguez Feo. His first book of poems, En la Calzada de Jesús del Monte, published in 1949, has been considered by national and international critics as a classic of Latin American literature. A student of English and North American literatures, he taught classes on this subject at Cuban universities and cultural institutions. In 1986 he received the National Prize for Literature for his entire work, and in 1993 he was awarded the prestigious Juan Rulfo International Prize for Latin American and Caribbean Literature, awarded by different Mexican economic and cultural institutions. Previously they had received it: Nicanor Parra (Chile) and Juan José Arreola (Mexico). The jury's decision was unanimous, between one hundred and ninety-five candidates.
