Emil Ludwig (Breslau, 1881 - Moscia, 1948) was born into a family of the Jewish upper bourgeoisie and studied law in different European cities, but soon discovered his interest in writing. He worked as a journalist at the Berliner Tageblatt and had huge success with his biographies. After the triumph of Nazism in Germany, he became a Swiss citizen in 1932. In 1933 Goebbels considered him a dangerous writer and all his books were publicly burned.
