He was a fable writer around 600 B.C. According to the many legends surrounding his life, he was a slave to the philosopher Xanthos on the island of Phrygia. He left behind numerous fables with universal morals, including: The Fox and the Grapes, The Field Mouse and the City Mouse, and The Hare and the Tortoise.
