F. J. Erskine

F. J. Erskine was a Victorian author whose only known work is the manual Ladies on bicycles. It was written, in Erskine's words, "for women cyclists by a female cyclist," and published in 1897, at which time women throughout the British Empire had gone on an adventure on their bicycles, which did not go very well. received by the masculine society of the time. Miss Erskine was, therefore, a transgressive woman who did her bit so that the so-called "New Woman" would be placed on an equal footing with men.
