Gampopa (1079-1153), also known as Dagpo Lhaje ("Dagpo doctor") and Dakpo Rinpoche ("Precious Master Dagpo"), founded the Kagyu school, one of the main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. From many points of view the foundation of the Kagyu school marked the beginning of what is now known as Tibetan Buddhism, as the Indian tantric model that inspired this movement has been disappearing.
