Giorgio Antonucci [Lucca, 1933–Florence, 2017] studied medicine at the universities of Florence and Siena. After graduating, he worked as an internist in Florence. In 1968, in Cividale del Friuli, he participated in the first hospital department designed as an open ward as an alternative to the asylum. From 1970 to 1972 he directed the mental health center of Castelnuovo ne 'Monti (Reggio Emilia), mobilizing the population against the asylum. From 1973 to 1996 he dedicated himself to the dismantling of pavilions of the Osservanza and Luigi Lolli asylums in Imola. From 1996 he continued to work in Florence for the liberation of people from psychiatry.
