Hegesias of Cyrene (fl. ~300 BC) was a Greek philosopher of the Cyrenaic school, famous for his profoundly pessimistic view of life. Known as Peisithanatos (the "Advisor of Death"), he argued that happiness is unattainable and that the goal of life should be to avoid suffering.
