Ishita Banerjee

Ishita Banerjee (PhD in History, University of Calcutta, 1994) is a professor-researcher at the Center for Gender Studies of El Colegio de México and a national researcher, level III, at the National System of Researchers (CONACYT, Mexico) since 2010. His research topics span religion, law, and power; caste, democracy, justice; gender and nation; food and emotion; and language and identity in modern and contemporary India with perspectives from anthropological history, post-colonial and gender studies. She has written 6 books:

A History of Modern India I and II (2018, 2019); A History of Modern India (2015); Religion, Law and Power (2007); Frontiers of Hinduism (2007); and Divine Affairs (2001). Among the more than 12 edited volumes are: Unbecoming Modern (2019); On Modern Indian Sensibilities (2018); Political Cultures and Cultural Policies (2017); Cooking Cultures (2016); and Caste in History (2008).

She has published over 50 articles and book chapters and edited the Hinduism series (De Gruyter Open). She has been Visiting Professor of the D.D. Kosambi at the University of Goa, India; at the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, Headquarters-Quito, Ecuador; at Syracuse University, USA; and Fellow, Max Weber Kolleg, Erfurt, Germany; Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, India, among others.
