Jean Bergeret

Jean Bergeret was a French physician and botanist (1751, Pontacq - 1813, Pau).

After his marriage in 1771, he studied philosophy and graduated in 1773. He separated from his wife in 1780, and settled in Morlaàs and began medical studies, obtaining his doctorate in 1788. He was favorable to the Revolution, and was Mayor of Morlaàs during all that difficult period.

In addition to practicing medicine, he taught Natural History at the Central School of Pau from 1796 to 1802. In 1803 he published his only work: Flore des Basses-Pyrénées, using the Linnean classification.

Bergeret dies in a fever epidemic that affected the region. His son, Eugène Bergeret (1799-1868), after studying medicine in Paris, replaces him as a doctor and as mayor.
