John A. Rice has been a professor at the universities of Washington, Colby College, Houston, Texas in Austin, Alabama, and Pittsburgh. He has received scholarships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Philosophical Society, as well as the Otto Kindeldey Award from the American Musicological Society. Member of the Akademie für Mozart-Forschung in Salzburg, he has been president of the Mozart Society of America. His publications include books and articles on Mozart (WA Mozart, La clemenza di Tito, Cambridge University Press, 1991; Monart on the Stage, Cambridge University Press, 2009), Antonio Salieri (Antonio Salieri and Viennese Opera, University of Chicago Press , 1998) and Empress María Teresa and the Viennese court between 1792 and 1807.
