John McGahern was born in Dublin in 1934 and spent his early years in the West of Ireland. He graduated from the University College Dublin; wrote four books of short stories and, in addition to "Darkness" (1965), five acclaimed novels, including "Amongst Women" is highlighted (1990). In 2005 he published his autobiography, "Memoir". He lived in Co Leitrim until his death in 2006.
