Intellectual and writer, settled in Paris in 1956, where he worked as a literary adviser Gallimard. Between 1969 and 1975 he taught literature at universities in California, Boston and New York. He has cultivated the essay, fiction, reportage, travel writing and memoirs. Since 1996 he settled in Marrakech. Regular contributor to the Spanish newspaper, El País in particular, for which it has been a war correspondent in Chechnya and Bosnia. In 2008 he received the National Prize of the Spanish Letters.
