Lindsey Davis is an English writer of intrigue novels set in ancient Rome.
She was born in Birmingham in 1949 and studied English Literature at Oxford, although as archeology had always fascinated her, she came close to studying history. One of her romance novels was a finalist for the 1985 Georgette Heyer Award, prompting her to forego any chance of pursuing a more conventional job and go all out to become a writer. She took him three years. She survived thanks to the government subsidy program for entrepreneurs. She was a cook for a tax advisory company. She continues to have a lot of fun researching, documenting and looking for the historical detail that adds color to the setting of the time. She is amused by the traits of humor that are manifested in imperial Rome and that she aspires to convey to the reader in her novels. Her most famous creation is the private investigator Marco Didio Falco, about whom she has already written twenty novels.
After Nemesis, Falco's 20th novel, it seems that Lindsey Davis will take a break with this character. Master and God, a novel set in the reign of Domitian, is scheduled for publication in March 2012.
Since 2013, Davis has started a new saga, starring Flavia Albia, adopted daughter of Marco Didio Falco and Helena Justina, and which takes place in Rome. Albia follows in her father's footsteps as a private investigator. The first novel in the series, The Ides of April, takes place in the year 89 AD, during the reign of Emperor Domitian.
