Maria Vittoria Calvi has extensive experience in research and university teaching, to which she has dedicated herself uninterruptedly since 1976, the year in which she was awarded the prize in Hispanic Philology, after defending a thesis on the work of Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio. She has held various teaching positions at various Italian universities, teaching Spanish language, linguistics and literature: since 2002, she has been Professor of Spanish Language at the University of Milan.

She is president of the Association of Italian Hispanists and director of the magazine Cuadernos AISPI. Studies of Hispanic languages and literatures, published by the same association. The journal, founded in 2013, aims to promote academic debate among researchers, with the greatest scientific depth, based on the emerging trends of international Hispanicism, both philological-literary and linguistic and translation studies. She is also a member of the board of the Discourse Linguistics Association (ALD) and a member of the International Association of Hispanists (AIH) and the Spanish Linguistics Society (SEL).

She has published, in Italy and Spain, more than one hundred and fifty works on Spanish language and literature, including monographs, editions, articles and book chapters. Likewise, she has carried out important work in disseminating the Spanish language and has stimulated the scientific study of it at the Italian University, organizing numerous congresses and conferences on linguistic and literary topics, both at the university level and in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes de Milan. She has been invited to give conferences and seminars at different Italian, Spanish and European universities (Palermo, Trieste, Turin, Alcalá, Cáceres, Madrid, Pamplona, Seville, Valencia, Amsterdam, London and Rennes). She is part of the scientific committee of several magazines on Hispanic studies, such as Español actual, Ibérica or Lengua y migración.
