Marvin Harris (Brooklyn August 18, 1927-Gainesville (Florida) October 25, 2001) was an American anthropologist known for being the creator and main figure of cultural materialism, current theory that attempts to explain the differences and similarities prioritizing sociocultural the material conditions of human existence.After the publication of The development of anthropological theory in 1968, Harris helped focus the interest of anthropologists in the relationship between culture, ecology, technology and demographics and the need to base anthropology in a scientific basis for the rest of his career.
