Matthew Walker. Liverpool (UK), 1973. English scientist and Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, Walker is also the founder and director of the Center for the Science of Human Sleep. This organization uses brain imaging methods, high-density sleep electroencephalography recordings, genomics, proteomics, autonomic physiology, brain stimulation, and cognitive testing to investigate the role of sleep in human health and disease. It studies Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, cancer, depression, anxiety, insomnia, cardiovascular disease, drug abuse, obesity, and diabetes. Walker has received numerous awards from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He has published over a hundred scientific research studies and has appeared in numerous television and radio outlets including 60 Minutes, Amanpour & Company, National Geographic, NOVA scienceNOW, The Joe Rogan Experience, NPR, The Drive, and the BBC. Since October 2017, he has been working as a sleep scientist at Google Life Sciences (Verily), an Alphabet Inc. research organization dedicated to the study of life sciences. He helps the scientific exploration of sleep in health and disease.
