He studied psychology at Duke University and doctorate in Georgia. Between 1980 and 1998 he developed his academic work at Emory University and served as the Yerkes Primate psychobiologist Center. Since 1998 he is co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology based in Leipzig, Germany. He is Honorary Professor at the Universities of Leipzig and Manchester, and co-director of the Center for Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research. His research includes cognitive sciences applied to social learning, cognitive processes compared (children and great apes), language acquisition, etc. In 2006 he received the Jean-Nicod Prize for his contributions to philosophy and cognitive science.
