Alexander is a civil rights lawyer and an acclaimed jurist. He has worked with Judge Harrry A. Blackmun of the US Supreme Court, with Chief Judge A. Mikva in the District of Columbia of the US Courts of Appeal, and has appeared as a commentator on CNN networks and MSNBC, among others. Before entering the academic world, she worked as a civil rights lawyer in both the private sector and non-profit organizations. Her last position was as Director of the ACLU Racial Justice Project in Northern California, where she collaborated in the launch of a national campaign against racial profiling. As a law professor at Stanford University, she led the Civil Rights Clinic and put forth a research program focused on the intersection between race and criminal justice. In 2005 he won a Soros Justice Fellowship grant that allowed him to write this book, and accepted a joint appointment at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. She currently works as a law professor at the Ohio State University. He spends much of his time writing, lecturing and supporting various groups and organizations against mass internment.
