Emeritus Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Salamanca, he has published numerous books and articles on philosophy, science, technology and politics. Among them are Technology, a philosophical approach, a pioneering work in the field of philosophy of technology in Spanish, or In favor of reason, vindication of a rationalist, critical and progressive philosophy. He has also been a member of the Steering Committee of the Ibero-American Encyclopedia of Philosophy and director of the Dictionary of Contemporary Philosophy, a representative work of the generation of Spanish philosophers of the seventies.
His political commitment led him to occupy positions of relevance in Spanish scientific and university politics at different times of democracy. He has been a senator, Secretary General of the Council of Universities and Secretary of State for Universities and Research. In recent years he has founded and directed the Institute for Science and Technology Studies at the University of Salamanca.
Among other recognitions, he has received the FUNDESCO essay award, the Prism award for scientific dissemination from the Casa de las Ciencias and the Grand Cross of the Alfonso X el Sabio Order. He is an honorary doctorate from the University of Valparaíso (Chile).
