Remy de Gourmont (1858-1915), a native of Normandy, graduated in law and was an official of the National Library of France, until the publication of his essay Le joujou patriotique (something like Patriotic bauble) caused his expulsion from the Library. Affected by a lupus whose treatment was disfigured face, finished seclusion and dedicated to his intellectual work. He published essays like Le latin mystique, Le Libre des masques, as Sixtine novels, and poetry, Divertissements. Mercure de France founder and contributor to numerous newspapers and French magazines, Gourmont was all his life a subtle and implacable enemy of topics concerning the ideas and feelings of freedom, equality, justice, honor and love.
