Roberto Vecchioni

Roberto Vecchioni, singer-songwriter, writer and teacher, was born in Milan in 1943, from Neapolitan parents. He graduated in letters in 1968 at the Catholic University of Milan, where he later taught History of Religions, to continue his teaching activity as a teacher of Greek, Latin, Italian and history in various high schools, and later return to university - Turin, Teramo and Pavia - where he teaches subjects related to music and literature. His musical activity began in the 60s, initially as a songwriter for artists such as Ornella Vanoni, Iva Zanicchi, Patty Pravo, Gigliola Cinquetti or Gianna Nannini. In 1971 he began to interpret his own songs; In 1974 he won the award for best album of the year, reaching since then a popularity as a singer-songwriter who has not stopped growing in Italy. His literary activity includes essays and fiction, in addition to collaboration with various written media. His first book, Il grande sogno, appeared in 1983, and was followed by Viaggi del tempo immobile (1996), Le parole non le portano le cicogne (2000), and The Selinunte bookseller, originally published in 2004. Vecchioni has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career, both for his musical and literary activity. His figure is that of a humanist hardly classifiable, and all his activity is impregnated by a creativity of great strength and originality, which translates to teaching, his essays on music, his songs and his literature. In his books we find a personal, singular and different vision of culture, of history, of the classic fables that he versions.
