Shyam Selvadurai was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to a Sinhalese mother and a Tamil father, members of rival ethnic groups whose conflicts are a central theme in his work. The ethnic riots of 1983 forced the family to emigrate to Canada when Selvadurai was nineteen. He studied creative and professional writing, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from York University.
