He was born in New York in 1907. Caricaturist, sculptor and author of children's books, he worked as a cartoonist at The New Yorker, where his light-hearted comic strips have amused his readers for more than six decades. In 1968 he decided to try another artistic side and published his first work for children. Although with his third book Sylvester and the magic pebble he won the prestigious Caldecott Medal, Shrek was the person who established him as an author in the publishing sector.
