Founded in 1980 by Víctor Manuel Mendiola and Guillermo Samperio, El Tucán de Virginia published both poetry and fiction in its early years. In 1985, the publishing house came under the sole direction of Víctor Manuel Mendiola, who continues to lead it to this day. Around the same time, the company merged with Editorial Luis Soto, a publishing house specializing in poetry, including original works, revised editions, and anthologies.

El Tucán de Virginia features a collection of bilingual editions called "Los Bípidos." Other collections include "Antología," featuring both Mexican and international writers; "Vita Nuova," dedicated to contemporary Mexican authors; and "Al volante," which publishes previously unpublished works.
