During an excursion to a lighthouse on the Isle of Skye, in the Hebrides, the Ramsay family recounts their experiences. From this very simple idea, based on the childhood memories of the summers that the author spent on the Cornish coast and centered on the figure of the mother, the novel revolves around the theme of the inexorability of the passage of time and the contrast between order and chaos. It is all, therefore, an amalgam of crossed and contradictory feelings, thoughts and emotions; the perfect example of the vision of an author who found in subjective reflection the ideal material to illuminate her literary work.

Considered by Virginia Woolf herself as her best creation, To the Lighthouse (1927) is undoubtedly a masterpiece of 20th century literature. And in this edition the most famous translation of it is added, that of Carmen Martín Gaite.
