Despite the multiple theories and cultural practices around the coding of pain, it is still possible to perceive gaps, contradictions and limitations. "Anthropology of pain" develops an illuminating analysis of this feeling as an individual fact of significance that, in its most radical consequences, borders on annihilation and the opening of the world: at the same time that it besieges the stability of the individual's relationship with others. others and with oneself, it can also revitalize and make more complex the spectrum of experiences that impact how that individual gives meaning to their existence. If the intensity lies in a specifically personal relationship with the ailment, permeated by historical-cultural conditions, this book is also a critique of the theoretical-methodological partiality with which relief is conceived, be it in the therapeutics of Western medicine or of the psychoanalysis, or the same common practices of our daily lives or in tribal societies. For the purposes of relief, I would demand a comprehensive therapy that fully attends to the uniqueness of the person.
