The Mexican Children's Library was an innovative initiative. Its objective was to transmit the history of Mexico to children in an attractive way, in order to achieve greater social cohesion and patriotic awareness in the new generations. The project was a great success that owed its fortune to Frías' bold historical interpretation and attractive illustrations. The Library of the Mexican Child (1899-1901) was a cultural initiative that responded to the Mexican educational demands of the nineteenth century, in its desire to extend culture to the humblest layers of the population and, in particular, educate and give patriotic values and national cohesion to children. The collection of booklets that formed the Library of the Mexican Child comprised eighty-five volumes and ranged from remote pre-Hispanic time to the time when they were written, that of the Porfiriato (1876-1910), and intended to transmit the history of Mexico to children. This project counted with the collaboration of two relevant artists, as well as an enterprising publisher that put into play the most advanced printing techniques of the time and an excellent distribution. The texts are the work of Heriberto Frías (1870-1925), a successful novelist and journalist, committed all his life to the liberal cause and a great patriot. Frías was inspired by his former history teacher at the Military College, Guillermo Prieto (1818-1897), and knew how to offer his small audience an exciting and entertaining history of Mexico, where heroes and heroines starred in varied narratives full of mystery and love. The illustrator was José G. Posada (1852-1913), a well-known artist who made the suggestive color covers, as well as the photogravure drawings of the interior that enliven the reading. The Library of the Mexican Child enjoyed great success. It was not only read by children of several generations, but also by illiterate people of humble class, who found in these simple but intense stories about the history of their homeland the emotion, and the knowledge of facts that made them proud of their past.
