The threat of nuclear catastrophes, a threat that only real catastrophes can make credible, is the necessary condition to affirm the power of the leaders, to calmly ensure the passage of a democratic society, even if it is only a simulation, an authoritarian-type technocratic society.

In our contemporary societies, tragedies are no longer repeated as farces, they are directly transformed into tourist destinations. After the broadcast of the Chernobyl miniseries, the number of visitors to the ghost region around the old nuclear power plant grew dramatically, although in 2018 it had already been 71,862 people. The trivialization of evil knows no limits in the era of the disconcerting lie. The idea that Chernobyl was "just an accident" that today we can happily commemorate, or even visit the irradiated places with the intention of taking a shocking selfie, is one more example of that voluntary servitude that Roger Belbéoch spoke of. The thousands of deaths caused by the accident, the consequences for the health of thousands of Belarusian children, the great masquerade and the blatant lies of the "experts" during the management of the catastrophe and the subsequent consequences, all this seems to have happened to the field of fiction without major problem.

In the two texts that make up the book (Chernoblues, 2001, and The Nuclear Society, 1990), Roger Belbéoch, a physicist by profession and a leader in the anti-nuclear fight, shows that nuclear energy not only creates harm to health and the environment: It also fosters a type of authoritarian society, the only one truly compatible with the industrial civilization crowned by the atom, where citizen servitude submits to the opinion of the experts of the technobureaucracy.
