On July 24, 1912, Friderike von Winternitz visited Vienna and spent the evening at the Riedhof inn, a place frequented by officials, officers, doctors and writers, where she saw Stefan Zweig. The next day, she Friderike wrote him an anonymous letter with which began not only her love relationship, but a correspondence that lasted for twenty years, until the writer's suicide in the middle of World War II. These letters are an extraordinary testimony of the deep bond that united the writer and his first wife during their life together and after their divorce, and a moving document of the lives cut short in Europe devastated by Nazi barbarity.
