The story began its journey many centuries ago, evolving according to the times and literary fashions, and was consolidated and reached its splendor in the 19th century. The subgenres of the story are many, with peculiarities of each one or in heterogeneous and miscellaneous harmonic, with features common to other related literary genres. Sheltered by the media as a broadcasting system, and sometimes confused with other journalistic genres, the spread in that century is enormous. Its brevity and conciseness are an incentive for its consumption and its expansion. The cultivators of the tale achieved different fortunes; Some were anchored in an archaic genre, little worked, that stopped being cultivated (Bécquer); many were excellent novelists, but their short story productions did not detract at all from their fame (Clarín, Galdós, Pardo Bazán); others were better storytellers than novelists (Alarcón); some were elegant storytellers with the finest perception (Valera); some others did not find serious matters for their stories, but rather frivolous or excessively temporary motives, not exempt of utility, however (Palacio, Picón); The female writers did not always show their feminine condition in their writing, but rather their personal character, independent of their sex, like the male writers; Some were unable to flee from exhausted or declining genres, such as costumbrismo or the serial (Fernán Caballero, Pereda), although their works are, at least, unique, and others did not stick to the short length of the story and got some productions between the short story and the short novel of original invoice and great interest (Galdós, Valera, Clarín); the creations of the most prolific (Alarcón, Pardo Bazán) present variety, but suffer from a certain dispersion and an undeniable lack of depth, although they achieve others of excellent quality and great literary value.
