The religious assent is an essay on the reasonableness of religious faith, or rather, the certainty that the Christian has on the fundamental truths of Christianity. In a letter to a friend, written in 1860, Newman says he intended with this work:_x000D_

"If I wrote a new book on testing would be popular, practical and personal in favor of Christianity, as opposed to scientific evidence. Its purpose would be to prove that any man, educated or uneducated, has for sure the same rights, the same rational reasons that can have a theologian who mastered the scientific evidence. "_x000D_
